For most merchant payments, the UPI transaction limit for a RuPay credit card is ₹1 lakh per transaction. However, this ceiling varies depending on the merchant category, how recently you linked the card, and your bank’s internal policies.

The real limit you can use at any point is the lowest of:

  • The NPCI-set UPI limit (₹1 lakh for standard merchants)
  • Your bank’s transaction cap for your card
  • The available credit balance on your RuPay card

For example, if your card has ₹40,000 in available credit, you cannot make a ₹60,000 UPI payment even though NPCI permits it.

RBI and NPCI Guidelines for RuPay Credit Card on UPI

In June 2022, the Reserve Bank of India announced that credit cards could be linked to UPI. Initially, only RuPay credit cards were permitted, as RuPay is India’s domestic card network operated by NPCI, giving full end-to-end visibility on transactions.

Under this framework:

  • Only RuPay credit cards can currently be linked to UPI (Visa and Mastercard are not yet supported).
  • Transactions are P2M (person-to-merchant) only. Sending money directly to another person’s bank account using your credit card is not allowed.
  • NPCI defines which merchant categories are permitted and which are restricted.
  • Interchange fee: Merchants pay an interchange fee of 2% on RuPay credit card UPI transactions above ₹2,000. Customers are not charged this fee.
  • Transactions below ₹2,000 carry zero MDR (merchant discount rate), making them free for both customers and merchants.

These rules apply uniformly across all banks and UPI apps that support RuPay credit cards on UPI.

UPI Transaction Limits Explained: Daily, Per-Transaction and Monthly

Initial 24-Hour Limit

Within the first 24 hours of linking your RuPay credit card to a UPI app, your spending is capped at ₹5,000 per card per day. This lower threshold is a security measure to reduce risk during the setup period.

Standard Daily Limit

After the first 24 hours, the standard daily limit for most RuPay credit card UPI payments is ₹1 lakh. This limit resets every 24 hours and is subject to your bank’s policy.

For certain privileged Merchant Category Codes (MCCs), your bank may raise this to ₹2 lakh per day.

Per-Transaction Limit

Each individual UPI transaction using a RuPay credit card can be up to ₹1 lakh. Some banks set a lower per-transaction cap depending on your card type and credit profile.

Special Category Limit: Hospitals and Education

NPCI has carved out a higher limit for specific high-value categories. Payments to hospitals and educational institutions can go up to ₹5 lakh per transaction. This addresses the practical reality that medical bills and college fees often exceed the standard ₹1 lakh ceiling.

NPCI Small Merchant Check

NPCI has a separate rolling-window check that applies specifically to small merchants (as classified by NPCI’s merchant category framework):

  • On weekdays, the total amount of transactions to small merchants is capped at ₹2,000 in any rolling 24-hour window.
  • On weekends, this rolling cap is ₹4,000.
  • Transactions above ₹2,000 to large merchants are not affected by this check.
  • This limit applies per account across all UPI apps.

Practical example: If you paid ₹1,000 to a small kirana store at 10 AM on a Tuesday, and then try to pay ₹1,500 to another small merchant at 8 PM the same day, the second payment will fail because the combined ₹2,500 exceeds the ₹2,000 rolling cap.

Monthly Limit

Some banks impose a monthly ceiling on RuPay credit card UPI transactions. This typically ranges from ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh, depending on your bank and card tier. Check your bank’s credit card agreement or contact customer care for your specific monthly limit.

Restricted Transactions on RuPay Credit Card via UPI

While RuPay credit cards work seamlessly for merchant payments, NPCI restricts the following transaction types:

  • P2P transfers (sending money to another person’s bank account or UPI ID)
  • P2PM transactions (peer-to-peer merchant, such as unregistered informal sellers)
  • Cash withdrawals at ATMs or merchants
  • Digital account opening platforms
  • Lending and BNPL platforms
  • Mutual fund investments
  • IPO applications
  • Foreign inward remittances
  • eRUPI vouchers

In addition, a fuel surcharge applies when you pay at petrol pumps using a RuPay credit card on UPI, as fuel is a restricted MCC category under standard UPI credit card rules.

If a transaction falls under any restricted category, the payment will be declined regardless of your available credit or daily limit.

Factors That Affect Your RuPay UPI Credit Card Limit

Four key factors determine the transaction limits you actually see in practice:

  1. Your bank’s policy. Each issuing bank sets its own internal limits within NPCI’s framework. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and SBI Cards, for instance, may apply different caps to the same NPCI-defined category.
  2. Your credit profile. Customers with higher CIBIL scores and a strong repayment history typically receive higher per-transaction and daily limits. New-to-credit customers may see lower initial ceilings.
  3. Card tier. Premium and super-premium RuPay credit cards generally come with higher UPI transaction limits than entry-level cards. Your card’s credit limit also directly caps what you can spend via UPI.
  4. The UPI app you use. Different apps have their own transaction limit configurations within NPCI’s guidelines. BHIM, PhonePe, and Google Pay may behave slightly differently for edge cases.

How to Increase Your RuPay UPI Transaction Limit

The NPCI-set ₹1 lakh ceiling is fixed and cannot be changed by your bank or you. However, you can improve your effective usable limit through these steps:

  1. Request a credit limit increase from your issuing bank directly through net banking, the bank’s mobile app, or by calling customer care.
  2. Improve your CIBIL score by paying bills on time and keeping your credit utilisation below 30%. A stronger credit profile unlocks higher limits.
  3. Upgrade your card tier. If you hold an entry-level RuPay card, switching to a premium variant often raises both credit limits and UPI transaction caps.
  4. Contact your bank to check if your card is eligible for a higher MCC-specific limit (up to ₹2 lakh per day for certain merchant categories).

How to Link Your RuPay Credit Card to UPI

Linking takes under 2 minutes on most UPI apps:

  1. Open your UPI app (PhonePe, GPay, BHIM, Paytm, etc.) and go to the payment methods or profile section.
  2. Select ‘Add Credit Card’ or ‘Link RuPay Credit Card.’
  3. Enter your card details (card number, expiry date, and CVV).
  4. Verify with an OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  5. Set a UPI PIN for the credit card account. This PIN is separate from your debit card UPI PIN.

Once linked, you can select the credit card as your payment source when scanning QR codes or sending money to a merchant UPI ID.

Note: Your mobile number must be registered with your credit card issuer for OTP verification to work. If you recently changed your number, update it with the bank before attempting to link.

FAQs

The standard limit is ₹1 lakh per transaction for most merchant payments. Special categories like hospitals and educational institutions allow up to ₹5 lakh. Within the first 24 hours of linking, the limit is ₹5,000.

Can I send money to a friend using my RuPay credit card on UPI?

No. P2P (person-to-person) transfers are not allowed with a RuPay credit card on UPI. You can only make payments to registered merchants (P2M transactions).

Why did my small merchant payment fail even though I had enough credit?

NPCI applies a rolling 24-hour cap of ₹2,000 (₹4,000 on weekends) for payments to small merchants. If your recent small-merchant transactions have already hit this threshold, subsequent payments will be declined until the 24-hour window resets.

Are there any charges for using a RuPay credit card on UPI?

Customers pay no charges. Merchants pay an interchange fee of 2% on transactions above ₹2,000. Transactions up to ₹2,000 carry zero MDR for everyone.

Can I use any UPI app with my RuPay credit card?

You can use any of the supported apps: BHIM, PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, GoKiwi, CRED, Groww, Jupiter, and others. Not every UPI app supports credit card linking, so check your app’s payment method settings first.

Will my credit limit affect how much I can pay via UPI?

Yes. Even if NPCI’s daily limit is ₹1 lakh, you cannot spend more than your available credit balance. If your card has ₹30,000 in available credit, that becomes your effective UPI limit.
